QUESTION ELECTRICAL/CHARGING
Premiere outing with a newly acquired ATLAS 1967 ended when the alternator burnt out and the rotor disintegrated. Frame no. 20-120611. Therefore contemplating complete upgrade with 3-phase alternator and Powerbox type rectifier/regulator. Headlamp is now H4, but no other variation from 12V standard. Magneto ignition, no coil, do not need capacitor. Dipped headlight compulsory at all times in Sweden.
1. Is upgrade to 180W advisable.
2. Difference between 2-wire and 3-wire 3-phase stator?
3. Original Lucas? If not equivalent LU- number?
4. Do you have Podtronics box as well as Boyer? Neater.
5. Price for suitable kit including 3-phase stator, 9-pole rotor and rectifier/regulator box?
ANSWER
Hello Chris, one of life's disappointments, it happens, in my opinion the rotor and stator where probably rubbing together, you will have to check the air gap with a feeler gauge. I am not sure you have any need to fit the three phase stator as you have a magneto its not so important. We have a range of stators, Lucas and imports but the imports have all been tested and in this instance are good. There is no such thing as a two wire three phase stator, there is a two wire 180 watt stator maybe you are thinking about that. we do not do podtronic controls but we do our own and they are very good, half the size and price of a Boyer. if you decided to go three phase we also have the control box for that. Price will vary slightly depending what you choose, I would go for the 47205 stator, you will not need so much current with the mag and it all makes a difference, with permanent magnet alternators they generate all the time and sap power. I would be quite happy on this occasion recommending the foreign versions of these components, rotor, stator, control box, (even though we have them made they are not English) They are very reliable and actually give a little more power than Lucas equivalents. Total cost all in delivered to you in sweden with Vat and post, £183.00, If you went down the three phase route it would not be much more, perhaps £200.00. Hope this helps.
